China’s labor market remained stable in May and the unemployment rate in big cities dropped slightly, the National Bureau of Statistics of China said on June 12.

According to the latest statistics, the urban unemployment rate in May remained at 5.1%, down 0.05 percent from April and 0.25 from one year earlier. The number of unemployed people aged between 16 to 24 fell by 0.25 percent from April and 0.15 percent year-on-year.

The unemployment rate of college graduates aged between 20 to 24 decreased by more than one percent compared to April and one year earlier.

Zhang Zhibin, a senior statistician with the NBSC, said the increase in employment can be attributed to incentives by the central government to encourage startups and innovations.

Statistics showed that an increasing number of the unemployed are seeking to start their own businesses, rather than finding jobs or staying at home, Zhang added.
