China renews yellow alert for rainstorms
Updated: July 18, 2023 13:43 Xinhua

BEIJING, July 18 -- China's meteorological authorities on Tuesday renewed a yellow alert for rainstorms.

From 8 a.m. Tuesday to 8 a.m. Wednesday, heavy rain or rainstorms are forecast to hit parts of southern China, including the provincial regions of Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Hunan, Guizhou and Yunnan, according to the National Meteorological Center.

Heavy downpours of up to 180 mm could lash some areas of Guangxi and Yunnan, according to the meteorological center.

Some of the regions will also experience heavy rainfall marked by 30 mm to over 70 mm of hourly precipitation, as well as severe convective weather conditions such as thunderstorms and gales, said the meteorological center.

Local governments have been advised to brace for the rainstorms and inspect drainage systems in cities, farmlands and fishponds. Transport authorities are asked to adopt traffic control measures on road sections with heavy rainfall and guide traffic in waterlogged sections.

China has a four-tier weather warning system, with red representing the most severe warning, followed by orange, yellow and blue.

Authorities warned earlier this month that China would face multiple natural disasters in July, including floods, severe convection weather, typhoons and high temperatures.
