PHNOM PENH, Aug. 13 -- Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen and visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi agreed on Sunday to further strengthen the strategic mutual trust and carry on the traditional friendship between the two countries.
At a meeting with Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, Hun Sen said the visit by a high-level Chinese delegation following Cambodia's general election highlighted China's firm support for the Southeast Asian kingdom and the ironclad friendship between the two countries.
The results of the election have attested to the Cambodians' trust in and support for the Cambodian People's Party (CPP), he said, adding that Cambodia will promote the transition to a new generation leadership in an orderly manner and maintain the country's stable and continuous policies.
The new Cambodian government will continue to further strengthen the strategic mutual trust and carry on the traditional friendship with China, the prime minister said.
Cambodia looks forward to jointly implementing the bilateral "diamond hexagon" cooperation consensus and promoting the "Industrial Development Corridor" and the "Fish and Rice Corridor" with China, so as to enhance the kingdom's self-development ability, he added.
Wang congratulated the CPP on its landslide victory in the general election, saying that an international observer mission composed of representatives from more than 60 countries unanimously agreed that the election was fair, transparent and in accordance with the law, and the results of the election reflected the shared aspirations of the people and the irresistible trend of the times.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Sen, Wang said, Cambodia has gone from war to peace, from turmoil to stability, from poverty to prosperity, and from the region to the world, as its development achievements are obvious to all.
The noises made by some external forces are pale in the face of the people's choice, Wang said, noting that the Chinese delegation's visit shows that China is full of confidence in Cambodia's future and the prospects of China-Cambodia relations when the kingdom is embarking on a new journey.
Wang said China highly appreciates the historic contribution made by Prime Minister Hun Sen to building the China-Cambodia community with a shared future, and treasures the high degree of mutual trust and profound friendship forged by the leaders of the two countries.
China will always stand with Cambodia, and firmly support Cambodia in taking a path of development suited to its national conditions, safeguarding national interests and dignity, and playing a greater role on the international and regional arenas, he added.
The ironclad friendship between China and Cambodia, Wang said, is everlasting and China-Cambodia relations enjoy a brighter future for development.
The Chinese foreign minister said China is willing to work with the new Cambodian government to build a high-quality, high-level and high-standard China-Cambodia community with a shared future in the new era, and to implement the important consensus of the leaders of the two countries, so that the friendship between the two countries is deeply rooted in people's hearts and passes on from generation to generation.
Cambodia is the last leg of Wang's Southeast Asia tour which has taken him to Singapore and Malaysia.
