Profile: German Chancellor Olaf Scholz

BEIJING, April 13 -- German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will pay an official visit to China from Sunday to Tuesday at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Qiang.

Born in Osnabruck, Lower Saxony, in June 1958, Scholz studied law and graduated from the University of Hamburg.

He served as a member of the German Bundestag, the federal parliament, in 1998-2001 and in 2002-2011.

Scholz served as general secretary of the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) in 2002-2004; the first parliamentary secretary of the SPD parliamentary group in the Bundestag in 2005-2007; deputy chair of the SPD parliamentary group in the Bundestag in 2009-2011; and deputy chair of the SPD in 2009-2019.

He was Federal Minister of Labor and Social Affairs in 2007-2009, first mayor of Hamburg in 2011-2018, vice chancellor and Federal Minister of Finance in 2018-2021. He has been Federal Chancellor since December 2021.

Scholz is married.
