Beijing Winter Olympics in the spotlight during 'two sessions'

BEIJING — To deliver a successful and spectacular Winter Olympics with unique characteristics, the Chinese government and people have made a solemn commitment.

At the ongoing annual sessions of the national legislature and the top political advisory body, the Winter Olympics has also aroused heated discussion among members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and deputies to the 13th National People's Congress (NPC).

"We will fully implement the decisions of the central government. And we will work with all parties to overcome difficulties to ensure the safe and smooth hosting of the Beijing Winter Olympics as scheduled," said Zhang Jiandong, the executive vice-president of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (BOCOG).

With less than one year to go before Beijing 2022, all 12 competition venues have been completed. Preparation work for the Winter Olympics is now in the home stretch. Relevant departments will work together to prevent and control the epidemic and prepare for the Games.

"China is still under great pressure to prevent imported cases," said Zhang. "It is a big challenge to host a smooth Winter Olympics."

An international working group on epidemic prevention and control for the Beijing Winter Olympics has been set up by the BOCOG, the International Olympic Committee, and the World Health Organization.

Yang Yang, China's first-ever Winter Olympic champion, has suggested a scientific and safety-based policy on "ensuring international exchanges and technical personnel's inbound to Beijing during the epidemic", allowing BOCOG to work as scheduled to ensure the smooth running of the Games.

"We will go all out to host a successful Winter Olympics and provide athletes from around the world a chance to realize their dreams," said Yang. "The organizing committee has several anti-epidemic measures well planned, and we are confident that the 2022 Winter Games will go on as scheduled."

Wang Yanxia, deputy director of BOCOG's sports department, said, "BOCOG will strictly abide by Beijing's epidemic prevention regulations and coordinate the entry of 180 urgently needed foreigners on the basis of prevention and control of the epidemic."

In addition to competition venue constructions and epidemic prevent and control procedures, a high-speed railway and an expressway connecting Beijing and co-host city Zhangjiakou are now operational, making commuting between Beijing and Zhangjiakou faster and more convenient.

CPPCC member Shen Jin made a proposal of establishing Beijing-Zhangjiakou demonstration zones of sports leisure and tourism at a national level, which will be conducive to further integrate resources and promote sustainable use of Olympic heritage, realizing the goal of engaging 300 million people in winter sports and building China into a sports powerhouse.

During the preparation process for the Winter Olympics, the Beijing-Zhangjiakou region cooperated in areas like transportation, ecology, and public services, which convinced local people that even a place with only ice and snow has its own value and potential. Now in Chongli, one out of every four people is engaged in snow and ice related work.
