NANJING — Nanjing, capital of East China's Jiangsu province, will gradually resume the operation of public transportation now that local COVID-19 infections have been contained.

Two subway lines connecting the city proper and the Jiangning district — Line No 1 and No 3 — will resume normal operations on Aug 20, and 24 bus lines linking the two areas will also reopen on the same day, according to the provincial department of transport.

Three other subways lines will reopen on Aug 26. Inter-city and inter-provincial coaches will also gradually resume operations starting from that day.

Nanjing, which witnessed the country's latest resurgence of coronavirus cluster infections attributable to the Delta variant, cleared all medium- and high-risk areas for COVID-19 on Aug 19.

The city logged no new locally transmitted cases on Aug 18. A total of 235 locally transmitted confirmed cases had been reported in the city as of Aug 18 since cluster infections began to emerge on July 20, when a number of airport cleaners were found to be infected during a routine testing.
