SCI-TECH JOURNALS
A growing number of sci-tech journals from China have improved their international rankings since the country launched a plan to boost the quality of its homegrown journals, with 96 of them ranking among the top quartile globally by subject.
Addressing a press conference, the China Association for Science and Technology said 25 journals by Chinese publishers are ranked in the top 5 percent globally by subject, while 20 journals are listed in the top 3 percent, and seven journals are placed in the top 1 percent.
BIONIC WHALE SHARK
An electric-powered bionic robot with the appearance of a whale shark has made its public debut at an aquarium in Shanghai since January, offering viewers a new visual experience of marine animals.
Developed by researchers from a Shenyang-based institute affiliated with the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation Limited, the "shark" is 4.7 meters long and weighs 350 kg. With its mechanical fins, it can swim, turn, float, and dive like a real shark. It can also open and close its mouth.
NATIONAL BIG-DATA CENTER SYSTEM
China has approved a project involving the construction of eight national computing hubs and plans to build 10 national-data center clusters, indicating that its strategy to channel more computing resources from the country's eastern regions to its less developed yet resource-rich western regions is in full swing.
The project, approved by the National Development and Reform Commission and three other central departments, marks the completion of the overall layout for the national integrated big-data center system. It will better empower the country's digital development.
