People’s Bank of China issues 10-yuan Monkey coins

Updated: Jan 8,2016 2:36 PM

Following the stampede for ‘Year-of-the-Monkey’ postage stamps issued earlier this week, now there’s a commemorative coin up for grabs too. Collectors are keen, though the number of coins will dwarf last year’s output for the ‘Year of the Sheep’.

Coin collectors started queuing at this China Construction Bank Branch in Lujiazui at around 7:30 this morning to make reservations for the Monkey zodiac coins. It is the second 10-yuan coin to be released by the People’s Bank of China after Sheep zodiac coins issued last year.

The 10-yuan commemorative coin features a monkey, a peach-shaped lantern, and plum flowers. Nearly 23 million coins will be released in Shanghai.

There are multiple ways for collectors to make reservations.

Around 80 million sheep zodiac coins were released last year, but this number will be dwarfed by the release of around 500 million Monkey coins. Collectors can reserve a maximum of 5 coins and pick them up beginning January the 16th.
