China braces for travel peak around Spring Festival

China’s railway system has readied itself again for this year’s holiday travel peak. Called “Chun Yun”, the travel rush occurs around the Spring Festival holiday. The holiday celebrates the lunar new year which falls on February the 19th this year. It is a traditional day of family reunions.

The number of passengers across the country is expected to top an average 100 million a day. The “Chun Yun” for this year will kick off on February 2 and will last 40 days. Guangzhou Railway Corporation, one of China’s largest rail giants has pledged to put more temporary trains into service to increase transport capacity.

Authorities have said that an unprecedented over 450 pairs of trains will be put into service during “Chun Yun”, including over 120 temporary trains. Ticket sales for these temporary lines will begin on Jan 16.
