One of the world’s most notable comic festivals, the Angouleme International Comics Festival has officially opened in the French town. And as the main guest this year, China has stunned visitors with its culture-rich and innovative comics at the Chinese pavilion.

Comic fans feasting their eyes on characteristic Chinese comics created by both young and established cartoonists. Among them is the Adventures of Sanmao created by Zhang Leping in the 1930s.

“The works presented here have satisfied expectations that European readers have of Chinese culture. We’ve known Chinese comics for a long time and we know that they keep getting better year after year,” says Nicolas Finet, editorial manager of Angouleme International Comics Festival.

Publishing houses in France have introduced several Chinese comics to their readers. White Deer Plain, a comic series based on a novel of the same name, is one of them.

With over 700 pictures created using Chinese ink and wash and elaborate-style painting elements, the comic works have been translated into French. A book signing ceremony and exhibition was held in the municipal hall of Angouleme.

“These comics are sensible and I am glad to see Chinese comics in France. It’s different from what we have in France,” says a visitor.

Xavier Bonnefont, mayor of Angouleme, attended the signing ceremony on the cooperation agreement between French publishing house Dargaud and Guangzhou Comicfans Culture Technology Co Ltd. He says, that as a comic town, Angouleme should deepen cooperation with China.

“I want to facilitate the partnership since we have an advantage in helping our Chinese friends. Meanwhile, China has also brought us a lot of things. I think it’s possible for us to further establish our partnership in the future,” Bonnefont says.

The Angouleme International Comics Festival is the second largest comics festival in Europe and the third biggest in the world. It has been held every year since 1974 in the French town in January.
