From under the sea to the towering mountains of Tibet, the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon in the Chinese Himalayas is regarded by many as the deepest canyon in the world.

The Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon is even longer than the Grand Canyon in the US. And in it sits the Namcha Barwa, one of the most famous mountains in the area. At nearly 8,000 meters high, it is one of the tallest mountains in the world.

The mountain sits in an isolated part of Southeastern Tibet rarely visited by outsiders. Known for its glaciers, forests, plants and rare birds, it is one of China’s most treasured sites. The remarkable diversity makes the area a natural museum of plants and wildlife. Two-thirds of highly developed plants, half of all mammals and four-fifths of all insects of Tibet can be found right here. The area has long been a popular destination for explorers and scientists alike.

Whether it is the exotic flowers and plants, the rare birds and wildlife, or the livestock of the local nomads, all of the features together form an enchanting image of Tibet.

Preservation efforts are under way in the area. Meanwhile, studies show that the majority of the land in the Namcha Barwa area are in good condition, natural and undisturbed. So it seems this tranquil and enchanting treasure should be around for future generations to enjoy.
