China is set to see a 10 percent rise in those travelling during this year’s May Day holiday. April 30 saw the start of the big getaway- with the number of passengers on China’s roads, trains and planes peaking during the afternoon. And more journeys are expected to come on May 1.

Trains have taken most of the strain. In northeast China, the city of Changchun has seen a 12% increase in passengers when compared with the number of last year with one hundred and forty-two thousand passing through the station on April 30.

Jinan railway station in east China’s Shandong province is expected to see a footfall of three hundred and fifty-two thousand passengers this year, with 65% of them booking tickets online or via telephone.

And in the central part of the country, the city of Zhengzhou will put on an additional 29 trains to deal with the travel peak.

Good news too for those taking to China’s highways, with most roads toll free for passenger cars with fewer than seven seats during the three-day holiday.
