China has opened sluice gates - Lijiaxia hydropower station in Qinghai - to fight floods. The reservoir is an important flood control project in the upper reaches of the Yellow River. The water discharge is aimed at lowering the crest of floods. The hydropower station was put into operation in February 1997.
