China says the nation's people have had secure and stable supplies of food since the 13th Five-Year Plan was introduced five years ago. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs made the comments during a news conference in Beijing on Oct 28.
1.4 billion Chinese people are enjoying safe and secure food supplies as authorities say the country has established over 72.5 million hectares of land for the production of grains over the past five years.
Liu Huanxin, vice-minister of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs said, "Grain output has exceeded 650 million tons for six consecutive years. The self-sufficiency rate of rice and wheat has remained above 100-percent, and that of corn has exceeded 95-percent."
The ministry also says the income of Chinese farmers have mostly increased over this period.
"The per capita disposable income of rural residents exceeded 16-thousand yuan in 2019, double that of 2010. And we reached that goal one year ahead of schedule," Liu said.
Chinese authorities also note the country's industrial poverty relief policies have helped 98-percent of low-income families in impoverished areas.
Liu said "More than 1 million industrial poverty eradication projects have been implemented in poverty-stricken areas. And we've built more than 300-thousand industrial poverty eradication bases across the country."
