The Chinese government decided to change the name of the National Science, Technology and Education Leading Group to the National Science and Technology Leading Group, according to a circular released on Aug 8.
The leading group will undertake the duties of studying and reviewing national strategies, plans and major policies in science and technology, deliberating on China’s important sci-tech tasks and programs, and coordinating major affairs among ministries and local authorities.
The group will be headed by Premier Li Keqiang, with Vice-Premier Liu He serving as deputy. Other members include ministers and heads from various central departments, such as the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
The office of the leading group will be set up in the Ministry of Science and Technology and headed by Wang Zhigang, the minister of science and technology. The leading group’s specific tasks will also be undertaken by the ministry.
