The State Council approved the annual deforestation limits for key forest regions during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), in a reply to the Ministry of Natural Resources and the National Forestry and Grassland Administration (NFGA).
The circular released by the State Council on Feb 9 urged the administration and other related departments to ensure that the limit is not exceeded. Quota changes under special circumstances, such as natural disasters, should be submitted for approval.
It urged NFGA to further refine deforestation management measures, while strictly carrying out the licensed deforestation mechanism.
Forest inspections should be conducted regularly to crack down on activities that destroy forest resources, ensuring that key forest regions see constant growth, continued quality improvement and steadily enhanced ecological functions, according to the circular.
NFGA should strengthen guidance and supervision in accordance with laws, and actions damaging forest resources will be held accountable, said the circular.
