Premier Li Keqiang and top legislator Zhang Dejiang have met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi during his state visit to the country.

In al-Sisi’s first visit to China since taking office in June, the two sides discussed a wide range of issues, with trade and investment clearly topping the list.

Premier Li Keqiang described relations as being at a new starting point. He announced China would be involved in big infrastructure projects in Egypt, including the construction of a high-speed railway, an undersea tunnel, a nuclear power plant, and that it would push forward the establishment of the Suez Canal economic corridor.

“Egypt has been working to ensure security and revitalize its economy. Egypt has attached great importance to the development of bilateral ties with China. China appreciates those efforts,” the Premier says.

Top legislator Zhang Dejiang also met with al-Sisi. Zhang said the agreement to elevate ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership was a step in the right direction.

He also called on the two countries to deepen political trust and exchange experience in legislation and governance.

For his part, President Al-Sisi said the strong willingness shown by the Chinese government to strengthen ties with Egypt was “unprecedented”.

Al-Sisi hailed the friendly ties between the two countries, and welcomed more Chinese investment in Egypt.

President Al-Sisi has a packed schedule in China. During his four-day visit, he’s met with senior officials and representatives from business, universities and the tourism industry. Before heading home, Al-Sisi is expected to visit Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, to tour factories specializing in technology and manufacturing. The Egyptian president’s tour is widely hailed as an important visit to China at a significant period of time. The milestone of establishing a comprehensive strategic partnership is taking bilateral relations to a new high.
