The 16th meeting of the defense ministers of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states was held in Bishkek, capital of Kyrgyzstan, on April 29, 2019.

State Councilor and Defense Minister Wei Fenghe attended the meeting.

SCO has made important contributions to world peace and international fairness and justice since its establishment 18 years ago, Wei said.

Defense departments and armies of the member countries implemented the consensus reached by their leaders, strengthened strategic communication, and deepened pragmatic cooperation, achieving fruitful results, he added.

The world today is facing great changes over the past 100 years, while peace and development remain the theme of our times, Wei said.

Noting the unstable and uncertain factors around the world, Wei called on member countries to uphold responsibilities, join hands to tackle complex challenges and defend world peace.

Defense departments and armies of the member countries should stick to the original intention and uphold the Shanghai Spirit to consolidate the foundation of mutual trust, improve pragmatic cooperation, and establish a community of a shared future, he added.

A sharing security landscape should also be established to make new contributions to the SCO community, Wei said.

During the meeting, the defense ministers also met with Indian Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Pakistani Defense Secretary Ikram Ul Haq, and Kazakh Defense Minister Nurlan Yermekbayev.
