BEIJING — Vice-Premier Han Zheng met with Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Carrie Lam, who is in Beijing to attend a meeting of the leading group for developing the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area on Nov 6.

Han, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said the disturbances in Hong Kong have turned into continuous violence in the past five months, undermining the overall interests of the Hong Kong society and the interests of the residents of Hong Kong.

The central authorities fully acknowledge the job performances of Lam and her governance team as well as the Hong Kong police in fulfilling their duties, said Han.

It is the most important task for Hong Kong at present to bring violence and chaos to an end and restore order, which is also a common responsibility of Hong Kong's administrative, legislative, and judicial organs, Han said.

Han voiced the hope that people from all walks of life in Hong Kong will gather stronger positive energy in countering violence, safeguarding the rule of law, and ensuring stability.

"We are fully confident in the 'one country, two systems'," said Han, calling for upholding and improving the "one country, two systems" in practice for its steady and long-lasting implementation.

He also stressed that the central government always stands firm behind Hong Kong in keeping its prosperity and stability and that the central government firmly supports the HKSAR government in adopting more active and effective measures to address people's livelihood issues, particularly the housing and employment issues for middle- and low-income families and young people, to make Hong Kong's development better benefit the general public.

Lam said the HKSAR government is firmly determined to end violence and chaos, restore social order in Hong Kong as soon as possible, and strive to tackle people's livelihood issues and promote the steady development of Hong Kong's economy.
