Vice-Premier Liu He encouraged Mianyang Science and Technology City to further implement the innovation-driven development strategy to become an innovative hub in Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle.

Liu, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks on Sept 19 during an inspection tour in Mianyang city, Southwest China's Sichuan province.

He inspected China Academy of Engineering Physics and addressed a meeting on Mianyang Science and Technology City construction.

Mianyang Science and Technology City has made positive progress in stimulating economic and social development with scientific and technological innovation, safeguarding national defense, and promoting integrated military and civilian development during past 20 years, he said.

More efforts should be made to enhance the capacity of independent innovation, intensify research on key core technologies, develop advanced and applicable technologies to ensure the construction of major national projects, Liu added.

He also urged the construction of infrastructures and platforms that can integrate technology, capital, information, talents, scientific research facilities and other resources.

Competitive industrial clusters should be built to support the industrialization of advanced technologies such as satellite navigation, information security, and intelligent equipment manufacturing, Liu said.

Scientific and technological system reform, talent cultivation and the role of market entities were also emphasized.
