Vice-Premier Liu He, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, attended the ceremony for the Tan Kah Kee Science Award and the Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Prize on May 29.
He also delivered a report for academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
Liu urged following the requirements for scientific and technological development raised by President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang.
Stressing the importance of scientific and technological innovation, the vice-premier called for taking a path based on China’s realities and creating a sound ecosystem for innovation.
Self-reliance and self-strengthening in science and technology requires continued efforts to enhance basic studies, support talent and foster international cooperation, Liu said, adding comparative advantages should be built in key links.
