BEIJING — China saw an apparent warm-up in consumption last month, boosted by a nationwide month-long consumption promotion campaign, according to the Ministry of Commerce (MOC).
The trade volume of goods and services in the country reached 4.82 trillion yuan (about $754.82 billion) in May, up 22.8 percent year-on-year, MOC spokesperson Gao Feng told a press conference on June 10.
Over 200,000 enterprises have participated in the campaign, which started on May 1, said the MOC.
The nine offshore duty-free shops in China's southern island province of Hainan saw their sales growing by 159 percent year-on-year, official data showed.
This year's activities have promoted a consumption upgrade in the country, said Gao, adding that China's effective control of the COVID-19 epidemic also helped accelerate the resumption of consumption activities in the country.
