Anhui’s six counties (cities), Yuexi, Taihu, Qianshan, Huoshan, Qimen and Xiuning, in the Dabie mountain area, established small hydropower stations in the 1960s and 1970s. Historically, these hydropower self-supply areas had played important roles in boosting economic development and improving people’s livelihoods. In recent years, the aging equipment caused some large-scale power blackouts, especially during severe weather. In November 2019, Anhui province launched a reform campaign in hydropower supply areas by transferring power grid assets and power supply business to the State Grid. According to the plan, the power grid upgrades will be completed by 2022 to achieve equal access to power supply services, which will benefit more than 500,000 people in the whole area.
