China leads world in trademark application

A ceremony was jointly held by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the State Administration for Industry and Commerce (SAIC) to celebrate the 125th anniversary for the establishment of Madrid International Trademark Registration System in Qingdao, East China’s Shandong province on November 15.

According to SAIC deputy director Liu Yuting, Chinese enterprises have greatly enhanced their brand awareness, leading to a growing number of application requests for trademark registration. And in this regard, China has been ranking the top in the world for 14 consecutive years.

Statistics show that by the end of October this year, the number of application requests, registered and validly registered trademarks in China, stood at 21.3 million, 14 million and 12 million, respectively. Those figures also indicate, in China, every 7.5 market entities own one valid trademark.

After more than a hundred years’ development, Madrid International Trademark Registration System has become an important platform for international communication and cooperation. Until the end of October, the number of validly registered trademarks submitted by Chinese applicants through the Madrid system reached 21,622.
