China’s first 5G subway station has been officially put into service in Chengdu city, Sichuan province, on Jan 5, following the opening of the country’s first 5G demonstration block in the city in 2018.
According to Sichuan Mobile, Taipingyuan Station of the city’s subway Line 10 is covered by high-speed Wi-Fi signal converted from the 5G network.
It is the nation’s first 5G digital indoor distribution system network based on the 2.6GHz frequency range, compared with the previous 5G base stations that were mainly deployed outdoors to expand the breadth of the 5G network.
The indoor distribution system focusing on the depth coverage will enable the signals to reach every corner of the station.
According to an official with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), China will apply 5G technology to terminal devices as early as the second half of 2019, leading to the primary commercialization of the technology in the near future.
5G testing puts users closer to system commercialization. And usage development is happening faster and faster. That means a quick, convenient future based on this technology is about to be at hand.
