China makes new progress in cleaning up online environment

BEIJING — China has closed more than 490,000 illegal accounts since January in a campaign against vulgar and illicit online content, the Cyberspace Administration of China said on Feb 27.

As of Feb 25, a total of 44.37 million pieces of harmful online information have been cleaned up and 1,462 websites shut down.

The administration vowed to make continuous efforts to improve cyberspace environment. It also urged local authorities and websites to strengthen supervision and management.
