BEIJING — China saw a total of 54 million railway trips during the three-day Tomb Sweeping Day holiday, up 9.9 percent year-on-year, according to the national railway operator.

The China Railway Corporation said it added 2,460 trains during the holiday to handle the increase and ensure safe and orderly trips.

April 5 saw a total of 15.23 million railway trips, setting a one-day record for the tomb-sweeping holiday.

Tomb Sweeping Day, also known as Qingming Festival, is an important occasion for Chinese to honor their ancestors. Many also spent the three-day holiday on leisure travel.

According to figures from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, China saw 112 million domestic trips during the holiday, up 10.9 percent from last year’s holiday.
