Updated: September 4, 2019 19:11 Xinhua

BEIJING — Beijing started to remove an expressway toll booth on Sept 3 to ease traffic congestion, according to the Beijing Municipal Commission of Transport.

The toll booth, located in Daxing district in southern Beijing, has 25 toll lanes and collects fees on about 15,000 vehicles per day.

The capital city will remove eight expressway toll booths at provincial borders by the end of the year, which will be replaced with electronic toll collection (ETC) system, the commission said. The city now has nearly 4.3 million ETC users.

By replacing expressway toll booths with the ETC system, China aims to help solve the problem of expressway traffic congestion, enhance traffic efficiency and reduce logistics costs.

China plans to complete the removal of expressway toll booths at provincial borders by the end of the year.
