Chinese cultural products in general have been proving popular on the world stage. Some of these products are now on show at the 58th Annual Global Performing Arts Conference and Marketplace in New York in Jan. A total of 55 programs have been presented at nearly 40 theaters at the conference.
China has showcased its music, drama, dance, as well as acrobatics at the 58th Annual Global Performing Arts Conference and Marketplace. All go to show the large potential market for overseas cultural investors.
“China is of course the second largest market in the world,” said Bob Nederlander Jr, the CEO of Nederlander Worldwide Entertainment. “China has a cultural history of thousands years, it’s a very sophisticated cultural market. And there is tremendous government support for the arts, and that’s the support, of course for supporting cultural industry in China, but also for export. So these are great conditions to work with in.”
China’s indigenous ethnic music and dance in particular, have enjoyed an enthusiastic reception in the global culture market.
“What people are really liking is when work is presented directly, without too many special effects, and overproduction values, all of that, it gets in the way,” said David Fraher, the CEO of Arts Midwest.
A musical drama, Mulan, will debut at the Lincoln Center this March, according to the China Association for Performing Arts. The 58th Annual Global Performing Arts Conference and Marketplace runs for five days.
