Chinese New Year is on everyone’s mind, and performances in the capital are now also taking on the festival theme. The China National Symphony Orchestra has brought a most original concert to Beijing. With the theme “Melodies from the Memories”, the concert takes the audiences on a whirl of the most recognized tunes in China.

A feast for the ears. The concert opens with this festive overture by composer Guan Xia from his Dianchi Lake Suite. Six Chinese folk pieces were blended seamlessly in, highlighting the beauty of traditional Chinese music.

This symphony piece inspired by Peking opera “Mu Guiying Takes Command”, brings to life the story of one of China’s most heroic female characters.

“This concert aims to bring the essence of traditional Chinese music, so we’ve incorporated a lot of traditional folk tunes but also some modern elements. There’s pop singer Lo Ta-yu’s single “Train”,” said Li Xincao, conductor of China National Symphony Orchestra.

The concert also features young pianist Xue Xiaoqiu performing the Yellow River piano concerto.

“Very impressive, I especially like the Yellow River piano concerto. It reminds me of my youth,” said an audience member.
