China’s first driverless monorail transit system started testing this week in Northwest China’s Ningxia Hui autonomous region.

Called Yungui, the system is being developed by vehicle maker BYD and telecom giant Huawei.

It uses a single track to support, stabilize and guide the train to run at a maximum speed of 80 kph. It also extensively uses artificial intelligence technologies such as facial identification.

The system is expected to start trial operations in the second quarter of 2018.
