More efforts will be made to upgrade information consumption and to secure personal information, according to the State Council executive meeting on May 10.

In terms of information consumption, the central government stressed that companies will receive support to develop digital home products and high-end intelligent devices such as smart wearable products and virtual reality devices, and new business models like online education, medical care and digital video will be encouraged.

Meanwhile, efforts will be stepped up to increase internet speed while reducing fees, and to lower the cost of telecommunication, logistics, payment, after-sales services and other expenditures in the whole business process.

With a new round of information technology revolution emerging around the world, it is vital to innovate through the internet to take a dominant position in technological development and to transform traditional industries, said Fan Shujian, deputy director of the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. “Especially in intelligent manufacturing, where the competition is becoming intensified among developed countries, we cannot lag behind.”

In addition, measures will be taken to reduce the cost of information service and enhance information security.

“The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will carry forward the construction of fixed and mobile broadband networks, to further cut costs and improve the quality of internet service,” said Miao Wei, Minister of Industry and Information Technology.

The meeting also decided to build an internet data security system, to better protect users’ personal information, and set up a reporting mechanism in case any data or personal information is leaked.

In the meantime, efforts will be maintained in real-name registration of phone users, in crackdowns on software that changes phone numbers online, and in interception of illegal messages, in order to prevent telecommunication and online fraud.
