China strengthens support for needy people

BEIJING — China’s central government budget financed over 840 billion yuan ($125 billion) for urban and rural basic living allowance, medical assistance, support for the extremely impoverished and temporary relief from 2013 to 2018, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.

Average annual increase of urban and rural basic living allowance standards during the time frame were respectively 9.2 percent and 14.7 percent.

Each year, close to 50 million people in strained circumstances receive frequent living assistance, while over 10 million people receive temporary living assistance. Allowance mechanisms for the disabled have also been fully developed, benefiting over 21 million people with disabilities annually, the ministry added.
