Vice-Premier Liu Yandong said artists should follow the suggestions President Xi Jinping made at a symposium in October, preserve the heritage from the older generation of artists, and continue to develop Peking Opera and other fine traditions of Chinese culture.

Xinhua News Agency said that Liu made the comments on Dec 14, when she spoke at a symposium in Beijing to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Peking Opera master Ye Shenglan.

Liu praised Ye’s contribution to the development of Peking Opera.

As part of the commemoration, established artists, joined by master Ye’s descendants and students, are presenting classical Peking Opera shows at Beijing’s Mei Lanfang Theater from Dec 14 to 17.
