Vice-Premier Liu Yandong outlined the key missions for the national health campaign when chairing a national videophone conference in Beijing on Jan 21.

The guideline issued by the State Council needs “complete implementation” and the national campaign needs consistent monitoring and progress, said Liu, also director of the National Patriotic Health Campaign Committee.

She urged greater contributions to building a “healthy, beautiful China” and realize the “Chinese Dream”.

Liu praised the campaign, which is more than 60 years old, saying it “improved the civilization quality and health of the whole nation”.

The vice-premier elaborated on six priority missions:

* continue to build on the legacy of the campaign, use innovation, safeguard people’s rights and interests on health, and provide the basis for coordinated economic and social development.

* conduct more hygiene campaigns in urban and rural areas, regulate and improve issues related to garbage, wastewater, smog and food, and make progress in renovating toilets and upgrading drinking water supplies in rural areas.

* stick to the concept of “putting prevention first” and “addressing both the symptoms and root causes”, scrutinize the origin of problems and take remedial measures, and press ahead with health education in rural areas, residential areas, schools, enterprises and military facilities, strengthen public awareness of disease prevention, and advocate a healthy lifestyle.

* firmly be conscious of “greater hygiene” in the community, push forward the building of cities and townships with good sanitation, explore how to build healthy cities, consistently work on perfecting feasible avenues and provide institutional guarantees for the comprehensive overhaul of the system.

* enrich the health campaign, innovate working methods, improve organization and system building, and strengthen law enforcement as well as oversight by society.

* effectively exercise prevention and control over infectious diseases in spring, and resolutely prevent any outbreak of major epidemics.
