An innovation-driven development strategy should be deployed to remove obstacles in systems, Vice-Premier Liu Yandong said while inspecting the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing on Feb 12.

Liu visited frontline scientific and technological workers and sent new year wishes to them. She praised their achievements in developing the economy, improving people’s livelihoods and boosting national security.

She stressed that the support of strong scientific and technological innovation is more necessary than ever as the Chinese economy has entered into “new normal” — a slower and sustainable phase. She added that national need and free exploration should be combined to make more breakthroughs. She also said research should be closely connected with practical situations.

Liu also emphasized that the system of reform should be deepened to make full use of resources. There should also be further reform in the administration of academia and talents to attract more able people and arouse their passion and potential for innovation.
