Vice-Premier Wang Yang called for all-out efforts in drought relief work to minimize losses, during a national conference on July 25.

Wang, who is also commander-in-chief of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, said authorities in drought-hit areas should make sure urban and rural residents have access to safe drinking water.

China’s northeast as well as the middle and western areas have been experiencing high temperatures and dry conditions, which has intensified drought. Additionally, some areas of southern China are suffering from floods.

Wang said efforts should focus on “expanding drinking water sources in multiple channels, utilize water resources in a scientific way, and strengthen anti-drought services and supervision concerning agricultural production.”

If required, the central government will allocate anti-drought funds as well as capital aimed at supporting agricultural production in areas hit by heavy drought, Wang said.

During the meeting, the vice-premier also stressed the importance of flood prevention work and typhoon preparedness as well as measures ahead of torrential rain and floods, in order to protect people and important facilities.
