Vice-Premier Wang Yang urged promotion of supply-side structural reform in agriculture sector to improve benefits and competitiveness during an inspection in Jilin province on Oct 6-7.

Efforts should be made to promote the reform on grain pricing mechanism and purchasing and storage system, and reorganizing agricultural production structure based on the need of the market should be stepped up, he said.

During a field trip in Jilin city, Wang urged the local government to exploit regional advantages, promote green brands, and develop deep-processing of agricultural products.

He also stressed the coordinative development in the sector and the integration of primary, secondary, and tertiary industries.

New business entities such as agricultural cooperatives and leading enterprises should play an exemplary role, and farmers should be provided with better services on information and technology, said the vice-premier.

He also called for efforts to enhance overall grain production capability, promote standard farmland construction, and increase technical supports to safeguard national grain security.

China faces a tough battle in promoting the reform on corn purchasing and storage system, said Wang. Major grain-producing areas of Northeast China should put relative policies in place, build collaboration platforms for grain production and sales, and bring more investments into the sector, he added.
