BEIJING — Registration for China’s unified qualification exam for legal professionals in 2019 will open on June 5, according to the Ministry of Justice.

Registration for the objective test phase will open from June 5 to 20 and the test will be held on Aug 31 and Sept 1, with each candidate sitting the test on either day, the ministry said.

Those who pass the objective test are qualified to take the subjective test. Registration of this phase of test will be open from Sept 7 to 11 and the test will be held on Oct 13.

Besides Mandarin, candidates can choose exam papers in the ethnic languages of Mongolian, Tibetan, Uygur, Kazakh and Korean.

China’s unified qualification exam for legal professionals replaced the previous national judicial exams in 2018 and expanded the range of candidates.

The previous national judicial exam was only taken by those aiming to become judges, prosecutors, lawyers and notaries.

Starting from 2018, candidates aiming to become legal arbitrators and civil servants whose jobs are to review and deliver administrative penalties or offer legal advice are also required to pass the new exam.
