BEIJING — The number of traffic accidents involving fatalities or injuries during the 2021 New Year holiday in China decreased by 25.7 percent compared to last year, the Ministry of Public Security said on Jan 3.

To maintain order on the roads during the holiday, there were more than 190,000 and 70,000 deployments of police officers and vehicles respectively each day, according to the ministry.

Police departments across the country have handled around 1.3 million traffic violations. In a nationwide operation targeting drunken driving on New Year's Day, the police dealt with more than 4,200 cases.

As the Spring Festival draws near, the ministry has urged the public to abide by traffic rules for safety reasons.
