State Councilor and Defense Minister Chang Wanquan pledged to increase practical cooperation with Laos while talking with Laotian Minister of Defense Chansamone Chanyalath in Beijing on July 18.

Chang noted that this year marks the 55th anniversary of China-Laos diplomatic relations, and the bilateral ties face important opportunities for development. “The Chinese military is willing to maintain mutual high-level visits and boost practical cooperation with Laos to guarantee each other’s national security and development,” Chang said.

The award of the South China Sea arbitration unilaterally initiated by the Philippines is neither lawful nor binding, said Chang, adding that China neither accepts nor recognizes the ruling. He appreciated the just and fair stance of Laos and the country’s strong support for China on the issue.

Calling China and Laos “good neighbors and friends”, Chansamone Chanyalath hoped that both sides will further strengthen cooperation in various fields.

Laos always supports China’s stance on international and regional issues, and looks forward to a peaceful resolution of the South China Sea issue by parties directly concerned through consultation, Chansamone Chanyalath said.
