State Counselor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with visiting US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Beijing on June 14.
Wang said China and the United States enjoy broad, important common interests, and there is a greater need for dialogues and cooperation. He expected the US to work with China to implement the major consensus reached by both sides in order to realize a healthy China-US relationship based on mutual respect, cooperation and minimized differences.
The two aspects should be given great importance to ensure bilateral relations stay on the right track, said the state councilor.
China and the US should continue to hold high-level dialogues to push forward bilateral exchanges and cooperation in fields such as the military, law enforcement, drug control and counterterrorism, Wang added.
On the other hand, despite some differences, the two sides should make joint efforts to respect each other’s core interests and major concerns, such as the one-China policy and the Three Joint Communiqués between China and the US.
Pompeo said the two countries have been forging ahead with cooperation in major fields. The US is willing to further cooperate with China on exploring a long-term strategic relationship and will stick to the one-China policy.
Pompeo also reported the results of the US-DPRK meeting held in Singapore, and spoke highly of China’s efforts on solving the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula as well as the positive influence of the meeting. He added that the US is willing to maintain cooperation with China on this issue.
Wang responded that the meeting was of historical significance as it provides a peaceful solution to the nuclear issue through dialogue. China urged the US and DPRK to fully implement the consensus reached during the meeting while encouraging more efforts from the international community.
