Vice-Premier Liu Yandong said health should be included in all government policies, and more sustainable cities featuring health services accessible to all should be established, according to Xinhua News Agency.

She made the remarks at a mayors’ forum on establishing “cities of health” at the 9th Global Conference on Health Promotion (GCHP) in Shanghai.

The Chinese government sees healthcare as an integral part of its national strategy and has been making efforts to promote universal medical insurance, the Vice-premier said.

She also called for global cooperation to bridge the gap in healthcare among different cities, address the cross-border spread of contagious diseases and curb chronic diseases.

Over 1,000 representatives attended the forum, including the mayors of 123 cities. They passed the “Shanghai consensus on cities of health”.

Organized by China and the World Health Organization (WHO), the conference is being held in Shanghai from Nov 21 to 24.

Since the first conference in 1986, it has become a key platform for WHO and member countries to discuss important global health issues and set the agenda for promoting health worldwide, Xinhua reported.
