BEIJING — Vice-Premier Hu Chunhua on July 24 called for increased attention on flood control and drought relief to ensure the safety of people’s lives and property.

Attending a work conference of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters, Hu noted that China is facing a critical stage for fighting floods and droughts and demanded intensified efforts and a people-centered approach in disaster relief work.

Hu stressed the importance of closely monitoring weather conditions, improving alert systems and fully utilizing water conservation projects in flood prevention.

More focus should be placed on high-risk areas, with strengthened checks and emergency responses to effectively cope with typhoons, landslides, and mudslides, according to Hu.

He also called for more support from central government organs in providing disaster relief funds, material support, and post-disaster reconstruction assistance.

Since July, rainstorms have hit many regions across the country, triggering landslides and floods.
