HANOI — Vice-Premier Hu Chunhua on Sept 12 voiced China’s opposition to protectionism and vowed to join hands with the World Economic Forum (WEF) to safeguard globalization and the multilateral trade system.

When meeting with WEF founder and executive chairman Klaus Schwab on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum on ASEAN, Hu said with the resurgence of unilateralism and protectionism, the world economic landscape remained complicated despite an overall global economic recovery.

China is willing to join hands with the WEF to resolutely oppose protectionism, and safeguard economic globalization and the multilateral trade system, he said.

China is also ready to work jointly with all parties including the WEF to promote the Belt and Road Initiative, make the new industrial revolution benefit all countries and people, and improve the global governance so as to achieve common prosperity and development, Hu added.

For his part, Schwab said the WEF advocated promoting globalization and multilateralism, and opposed protectionism and unilateralism.

The WEF is willing to continue strengthening cooperation with China in advancing the Belt and Road Initiative and innovation-driven development, so as to jointly contribute to the sustainable, balanced recovery of the world economy, Schwab added.

Hu is in Hanoi to attend the WEF on ASEAN 2018 from Sept 11 to 13.
