BEIJING — Vice-Premier Han Zheng on Feb 27 urged all regions and government departments to get a clear picture of the country’s grain stockpiles to help ensure grain security.

Han, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks while attending a teleconference.

Food security is closely related to the country’s economic development, social stability and national security, he said.

He recognized the progress the country had achieved in grain work, but also pointed out that some problems remained in the management of grain stockpiles.

Authorities at all levels should not only check on the quantity and quality of grain stockpiles, but also eliminate hidden dangers, Han said, adding that greater efforts should be made to promote online real-time monitoring and supervision of the stockpiles.

He also said that the country would accelerate legislation on grain security, and improve the grain reserve management mechanism.

Grain output amounted to 657.89 million tons last year, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics.
