BEIJING — State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Joanna Wronecka and Alya Ahmed Saif Al-Thani, co-chairs of the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) on the United Nations Security Council Reform of the 75th Session of the UN General Assembly, through video link on Jan 27.

Wang congratulated Wronecka and Al-Thani for serving as IGN co-chairs and said China would fully support their work.

Wang said the reform of the Security Council concerns the future development of the UN and the vital interests of its member states. The reform should reflect fairness and justice, increase the representation and voice of developing countries, give more small and medium-sized countries the opportunity to participate in the decision-making of the Security Council, and correct historical injustices against Africa.

He said the reform must follow the rule of law and maintain the IGN, the only legitimate platform authorized by the UN General Assembly for member states to discuss Security Council reform.

The reform should reflect the leadership of UN member states, adhere to extensive democratic consultations, and gradually accumulate consensus, so as to find a "package" solution acceptable to all parties, said Wang.

He also highlighted that the reform must be carried out in a stable and orderly manner, and effectively safeguard the unity of member states as well as the prestige of the UN.

Wronecka and Al-Thani, who are permanent representatives to the UN of Poland and Qatar, respectively, said they appreciated China's efforts to safeguard multilateralism and strengthen the role of the United Nations.

After introducing the first round of negotiations of the IGN, they expressed their willingness to continue to widely listen to member states' opinions, keep in close communication with member states including China, and strive to build consensus in order to promote the reform in a manner that best suits the interests of the majority of the UN member states.
