Yang Kang, a 13-year-old girl in Ankang city, Shaanxi province, always remembers the time when Premier Li Keqiang went to visit her home just before Spring Festival on Jan 27, 2014.

“The Premier asked about my school work; whether it was far to go to school and whether everything was fine at home,” Yang said.

Yang’s village is a place with many old people and children, as most of the adults are migrant workers. Her father was one of them.

Premier Li phoned Yang’s father, who was working in Zhejiang province, and told him things were going well at home. The premier was also concerned about whether Yang’s father could come back before New Year’s Eve, and wished him a safe trip.

Besides Yang’s father, there were over 40 migrant workers from other places around the country working with him at the time. Hearing the news that Li had visited Yang’s home and called him, some who originally did not plan to go home changed their minds.

The life of Yang’s family is getting better. This year, Yang’s father, who has been a migrant worker for over a decade, bought a new flat for the family.

In the Government Work Report of 2014, Li said that the urbanization of around 100 million people in Midwestern regions should be promoted.

The premier also said that the nation is accelerating the process of promoting a new type of urbanization and researching new policies encouraging migrant workers in Midwestern regions to go to their hometowns and start their own businesses. He said this when visiting a migrant worker service station in Guizhou province on Feb 14.
