China is willing to expand energy cooperation with Iraq by further participating in oil field development and refinery construction in Iraq, Premier Li Keqiang said on Dec 22.

“Iraq stands as an important partner for China in West Asia. We would like to build a long-term and integrated partnership in energy with Iraq,” said Premier Li in a meeting with visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi.

Premier Li said China supports Iraqi government’s efforts in advancing domestic political reconciliation and economic reconstruction.

“The two countries should boost cooperation on industrial capacity, mainly in industries such as cement, steel, plate glass and engineering machinery to help Iraq improve its production capability,” he said, adding that Chinese enterprises will also help build power plants, airports, ports and telecommunication facilities.

In particular, Premier Li urged Iraq to take effective measures to guarantee security for Chinese nationals and enterprises in Iraq, and provide convenience for them.

Abadi extended his gratitude for China’s support in maintaining economic development and social stability in Iraq, saying his country welcomes Chinese investments in infrastructure, oil, electricity and telecommunication.

Before the formal talk, Abadi conveyed his sympathy to Premier Li on casualties and financial loss caused by the massive landslide in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, on Dec 20.

Premier Li said Chinese government is making every effort to minimize casualties.
