State Council appoints Lam as Hong Kong SAR chief executive

The 7th plenary meeting of the State Council presided over by Premier Li Keqiang appointed Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor as the fifth-term chief executive of China’s Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR).

According to the decision at the March 31 meeting, Lam will take office on July 1.

The meeting reviewed the report on the election of Lam by the Hong Kong SAR government and the report on the election process by Wang Guangya, head of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council.

The election of the fifth-term chief executive of China’s Hong Kong Special Administrative Region was carried out in accordance with the law and fully conformed to the Basic Law of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and relevant decisions by the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, showing the principle of openness, fairness, and impartiality, according to Premier Li.

Lam’s election manifests the common recognition, trust and expectation of all circles of Hong Kong, he said.

Premier Li noted that the central government will continue to fully implement the principles of “one country, two systems”, “Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong” and a high degree of autonomy, strictly abide by the Constitution and the Basic Law, and support the chief executive and the HKSAR government in administering Hong Kong in accordance with the law to develop the economy and improve people’s lives.

The Premier called on the HKSAR government to take practical measures to deepen the cooperation between the mainland and Hong Kong, promote the development of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao city cluster, and improve Hong Kong’s role in national economic development and opening-up by exerting the SAR’s unique advantages.

Premier Li believed that under Lam’s leadership the HKSAR government and people will maintain long-term prosperity and stability in the SAR and usher in a better future.

At the meeting, the Premier signed the State Council order appointing Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor as the fifth-term chief executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
